The History of Yoga: From Vedic Roots to Modern Practice

with Teacher Scott

Course Description:

This dynamic and interactive course traces the rich and complex history of Yoga from its ancient Vedic roots through classical formulations and into later developments, including Hatha Yoga traditions. Designed for seekers, practitioners, and teachers alike, the course offers a deep dive into key yogic texts, figures, and philosophical frameworks that have shaped the tradition over thousands of years.

Students will explore foundational scriptures such as the Upaniṣads, Bhagavad Gītā, and Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali, gaining insight into core concepts like ātman (Self), Brahman (Ultimate Reality), and nirodha (mental stilling). We will examine the emergence of yogis as forest-dwelling spiritual renegades, their divergence from mainstream Vedic ritualism, and their role in shaping introspective and liberation-focused spiritual paths.

Through guided readings, reflection, discussion, and comparative analysis, students will:

  • Understand Yoga as both philosophy and practice.
  • Investigate the historical shift from ritual to meditation and self-inquiry.
  • Explore the definitions and goals of Yoga across different texts.
  • Examine the evolution of Yoga into the physical and energetic practices of Hatha Yoga.
  • Analyze the teachings of Kṛṣṇa in the Bhagavad Gītā and how they reframe action, devotion, and knowledge as forms of Yoga.

Later sessions introduce the rise of the Nāth Yogis and the development of Hatha Yoga as a systematic path emphasizing purification and energetic awakening, grounded in seminal texts like the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā.

Key Themes Include:

  • What is Yoga? Definitions across traditions
  • The Seer and the Self (ātman)
  • Metaphysical concepts in the Upaniṣads
  • Karma, Jñāna, Bhakti, and Rāja Yogas in the Bhagavad Gītā
  • Classical Yoga of Patañjali
  • The development of Hatha Yoga and its purificatory practices
